Apple Intelligence Comes to China in December With Alibaba Qwen

Published:

Apple Intelligence is set to reach mainland China in December, with Alibaba’s Qwen models handling some of the AI work. Developer testing is due to start on November 4. Here is what has been reported and what remains unclear.

What has been reported

  • The first Apple Intelligence features for China are tied to iOS 27.3, due in December, with the Qwen-powered features available in a developer beta from November 4 (Asia News Network).
  • Qwen is reachable through Siri, Apple’s writing tools and Visual Intelligence. Reports describe a “Compose with Qwen” option for generating text and images, and an “Ask Qwen” option in Visual Intelligence for identifying objects and places.
  • The integration is opt-in. Apple asks for permission before a question, document or image is sent to Qwen, and users can sign in with Apple or an existing Qwen account.
  • Alibaba says requests and responses handled through the integration will not be used to train its models.

What is not included

The December update does not bring the more advanced Siri capabilities shown at this year’s developer conference. Image Playground is also reported as absent from the China feature set (Computerworld).

The rest of the launch list is mostly the familiar set: writing tools, Clean Up in Photos, notification and email summaries, smart replies, Live Translation and Text to Siri, according to Computerworld.

Approvals

Computerworld reports that China’s internet regulator, the Cyberspace Administration of China, cleared Apple in July 2026, and that the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology approved Alibaba’s AI models for use with iPhone in October. It also says government approval is needed for ongoing updates to the feature suite. Apple and Alibaba have not been quoted here on those approval details, so treat them as reported rather than confirmed by the companies.

Open questions

  • Supported devices. Reports differ on which iPhones qualify. One lists the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max, iPhone 16 and later, and iPhone Air, with a language limit of English or Simplified Chinese; another does not list models. Check Apple’s own page before relying on any list.
  • Private Cloud Compute. It is not clear whether requests from Chinese users will use Apple’s Private Cloud Compute.
  • Other platforms. Alibaba has said Qwen could later extend to iPad, Mac and other Apple platforms in China, but no dates have been given.
  • Announcement date. Outlets give slightly different dates for the original announcement, around the end of October and the first days of November.

Why it matters

Apple Intelligence has so far been missing from iPhones sold in China, in part because Apple needed a local model partner. This arrangement gives Chinese users a version of the feature set, built on a domestic model, while leaving out the biggest Siri upgrade. The beta starting this week will show how the features behave in practice.
