How to Check iPhone Battery Health and What the Messages Mean

Published:

On an iPhone, the Battery Health screen shows how much charge the battery can hold compared with when it was new. Apple says this figure, called Maximum Capacity, is the main number to check when deciding whether a battery needs service. This guide covers where to find it, what the messages mean and what Apple says about replacement.

Where to find Battery Health

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Battery.
  3. Tap Battery Health.

Maximum Capacity appears on that screen. A lower percentage means the phone holds less charge than it did when new, so it needs charging more often.

How long a battery is designed to last

Apple states that iPhone 14 models and earlier are designed to keep about 80 percent of their original capacity after 500 complete charge cycles under ideal conditions. For iPhone 15 models, the figure is 1,000 cycles at the same 80 percent. Real results depend on how the phone is used and charged, so the numbers are design targets, not guarantees.

What the Peak Performance Capability messages mean

The same screen can display one of these statuses, according to Apple:

  • Normal peak performance: the battery supports normal peak performance, and performance management is not applied.
  • Performance management applied: the phone shut down unexpectedly because the battery could not deliver enough peak power, so iOS limited performance to help prevent a repeat. This can be turned off, but once off it cannot be turned back on by hand. It returns automatically if another shutdown occurs.
  • Performance management turned off: it was disabled manually after a shutdown. If another shutdown happens, the protections are applied again.
  • Battery health significantly degraded: health has dropped substantially. Apple says this is not a safety issue, but battery life and performance problems may be more noticeable. An Apple Authorized Service Provider can replace the battery.
  • Unable to verify: the iPhone cannot confirm that it has a genuine Apple battery, so the health information may be inaccurate. This message applies to iPhone XS and later.

Warranty and paid service

Apple’s one-year warranty (two years in Turkiye) covers a defective battery, in addition to rights under local consumer law. After the warranty ends, Apple offers battery service for a fee. Apple’s support page does not state the fee, so check the price for a specific model with Apple or an Authorized Service Provider.

When to consider a replacement

Apple’s support page gives no single percentage at which a battery must be replaced. It points to the “significantly degraded” message as the case where an Authorized Service Provider can replace the battery. Signs that match the messages above include unexpected shutdowns and a Maximum Capacity well below the 80 percent design target for the number of cycles the phone has been through.
