Meta Ends Feature Development for Quest 2 and Quest Pro: Key Dates

Published:

Meta has told developers and owners that the Quest 2 and Quest Pro headsets are moving into what it calls “end of feature development.” The headsets will keep working and keep receiving security fixes for about a year, but the final system update is already scheduled and new software features will be reserved for newer hardware. The timeline below is based on Meta’s announcement as reported by Engadget, UploadVR and Road to VR.

What Meta has confirmed

  • Final OS release: Horizon OS v2.13 is the last system release for both headsets. UploadVR reports it begins rolling out in January 2027 and reaches all devices by March 2027.
  • Last SDK: Meta VR OS SDK v213 is the last supported developer kit for the two devices.
  • Security fixes continue: Security patches and critical bug fixes are planned through the end of 2027. UploadVR describes them as quarterly.
  • New features go elsewhere: After v2.13, new operating-system features, platform capabilities and APIs will only be available on Quest 3, Quest 3S and newer devices. Meta will also stop testing new OS and SDK releases against the Quest 2 and Quest Pro.
  • New apps: Developers can submit new apps that support the two headsets until December 2027.

What does not change for owners

Meta says existing apps and games “will remain fully functional.” Owners can still find, buy, download and play titles from the store, and cross-play with Quest 3 and Quest 3S users continues where an app supports it. Developers can also keep shipping updates to apps that already support the older headsets, including bug fixes and content updates, according to Road to VR.

The practical difference is that new releases may stop arriving for these devices. Meta’s rules reportedly require developers to give at least 180 days’ notice if ending support for the older headsets would cost users access to content or essential services. Developers can also freeze a final build for the devices or stop selling an app on them. Cross-play has no announced end date.

Where this fits in Meta’s lineup

The Quest 2 launched in October 2020, originally as the Oculus Quest 2, at a starting price of $300 according to UploadVR. The Quest Pro followed in October 2022 at $1,500. Meta announced at its Connect event in September 2024 that it would wind down sales of both headsets. The Quest 3 arrived in October 2023 at $500 and the cheaper Quest 3S in October 2024 at $300, per UploadVR.

Road to VR describes the Quest 2 as one of the best-selling consumer VR headsets, with an estimated 20 million units sold over its lifetime. That figure is an estimate, not a number Meta published in this announcement. Engadget notes that Meta says millions of people still use the Quest 2 and Quest Pro, and that the company is shifting attention to newer products, including its upcoming Meta VR Glasses.

UploadVR reports those glasses are due in spring 2027 at $1,300, with 2.4K micro-OLED displays and a tethered puck. Road to VR also expects them next spring. Meta has not, in the reporting reviewed here, said they replace the Quest line outright.

A precedent: the original Quest

Meta has wound down a headset in stages before. UploadVR recounts the original Quest, which launched in May 2019: its OS updates ended in February 2023, new app submissions were barred from May 2024, and security updates and bug fixes ended in August 2024. If the Quest 2 follows a similar path, the stages would be a final OS in early 2027, a close to new submissions at the end of 2027, and an end to security fixes after that. Meta has only announced the dates above, so any later cut-off is a comparison, not a confirmed plan.

What owners can do

  • Install system updates when they arrive in early 2027 so the headset receives the final release and later security patches.
  • Do not expect new Meta system features after v2.13. Some may appear on Quest 3 and Quest 3S only.
  • Check an app’s store page before buying if you want long-term updates. Developers decide whether to keep supporting older hardware.
  • If you are choosing a headset now, keep in mind that Meta announced the wind-down of Quest 2 and Quest Pro sales in 2024, and that the final OS release is already scheduled.

What is still unclear

The reporting reviewed here does not say when security patches will stop after 2027, whether any price changes will follow, or how many developers will drop Quest 2 support in 2027. Sources also differ slightly on the date of the announcement, with UploadVR carrying a November 2 date and Engadget and Road to VR dating their reports November 3. This article will be corrected if Meta publishes further details.
